Matabari and the Tripura Sundari tradition

Tripura Sundari Temple, commonly called Matabari, belongs to the pilgrimage landscape of Udaipur in Tripura. Include the state name in searches and bookings: Udaipur in Rajasthan is a different destination. The temple’s own account dates its foundation by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya to 1501.

The temple account describes the Goddess image as carved in dark reddish stone, with four arms, standing over Shiva. This local description gives a more precise starting point than assuming that every image of Tripura Sundari has identical iconography.
