Kalighat beside the Adi Ganga
Kalighat is a Kali shrine in Kolkata’s Adi Ganga setting. Kolkata Municipal Corporation records the local tradition that a toe of Sati’s right foot fell here. The Peetha association explains sacred significance; the history of the present temple concerns a different timescale.
The municipal account dates the temple associated with Santosh Roy to 1809 and separately describes the entrance arch and nearby Nakuleshwar shrine. This is a useful way to read the complex: the principal temple, its approach and a neighbouring shrine need not have the same patron or construction date.
