The yellow on a wedding cloth and the yellow in a pot of dal may come from the same familiar spice. Yet a photograph of a haldi ceremony is unlikely to tell you how much turmeric the family uses in dinner, much less what is in a concentrated supplement.
When describing a ceremony, start with the people: who mixed the paste, who was invited to apply it, and what the family calls the occasion. In some Gujarati families the word you will hear is pithi. Let the participants name their own custom; neighbouring families may use a different paste or attach a different meaning to it.
When a health headline travels alongside the photograph, read it separately. Check whether the research concerned turmeric as food, an extract, or a particular formulation. The ceremonial bowl is evidence about celebration and belonging. It cannot establish the safety or effectiveness of a product sold under the same familiar name.
