A Tulsi Plant Has More Than One Biography

Bharatiya SanskrutiPublished 31 Oct 2026Updated 31 Oct 20261 min read

A household tulsi may have arrived as a cutting from a neighbour rather than as a purchase. One person remembers watering it before school; another remembers the courtyard where the pot stood before the family moved. A botanical label alone cannot recover either memory.

Begin a plant portrait with place and care. Does the pot sit near the entrance, on a balcony or in a shared courtyard? Who looks after it when the family travels? Ask before photographing household worship, and record the local name as spoken. These details keep a sacred plant connected to the people who tend it.

A nursery name, a remembered family use and a verified botanical identification belong in separate lines of the record. If you cannot confirm the species, say so. A plant portrait can be complete as cultural history without suggesting that readers ingest an unidentified leaf or use it in place of medical care.
