Two visitors can return from different clinics and both say they encountered the word basti. One may be describing a Panchakarma procedure involving administration by the rectal route. Another may have heard a compound such as kati basti used for an external application around the lower back. The shared word does not make the interventions interchangeable.
Within Panchakarma lists, distinctions also appear between oil-based and decoction-based enemas. Those distinctions help explain why one list may give basti two entries. They are descriptive categories, not recipes for a first-time reader.
If a consent form uses only a short label, ask the practitioner to write the full procedure and route in ordinary language. An invasive intervention raises questions about hygiene, injury, monitoring and the reason for proposing it at all. Never infer from the word herbal that a homemade mixture is suitable for rectal use.
