An elder oiling a child's limbs before a bath, a therapist working in a clinic and a guest booking a spa massage occupy three different settings. The word abhyanga can start a conversation about oil massage; it cannot tell us by itself what happened, who consented, or what purpose the touch served.
For a cultural account, ask about the occasion, the oil's scent and who taught the practice. For a booked service, the useful questions change. Which ingredients will touch the skin? Which areas will be covered? Can pressure be changed or the session ended immediately? A customer should be able to ask these things without explaining a personal history.
Oil massage may appear in accounts of preparation for Panchakarma. It is not a synonym for the whole system. Describing a massage as soothing is a report about someone's experience. Describing it as a treatment for a disease requires evidence about that particular claim.
