Panchakarma: Why Two Lists of Five Can Look Different

Bharatiya SanskrutiPublished 31 Oct 2026Updated 31 Oct 20261 min read

The name Panchakarma points to five actions. Open two descriptions, however, and the lists may not agree at first glance. One may count two forms of basti separately; another may group basti together and include raktamokshana, or bloodletting. Before deciding that one list has a missing item, check how each author has done the counting.

Vamana refers to induced vomiting, virechana to purgation, basti here to enema procedures, and nasya to administration through the nose. These words describe distinct interventions. They are not five experiences that every visitor is meant to collect during a stay.

A useful way to read a clinic brochure is to place its actual services beside its umbrella term. If it says Panchakarma but lists only external massage, ask what the programme includes. If it proposes invasive procedures, ask why each one is being considered and what safer alternatives exist. The Sanskrit name alone settles neither the clinical question nor the question of consent.
