Vata, Pitta and Kapha Beyond the Personality Quiz

Bharatiya SanskrutiPublished 31 Oct 2026Updated 31 Oct 20261 min read

An online quiz asks whether you prefer cool weather and returns a label in large type: Pitta. What has it actually measured? At most, your answers to a particular set of questions on a particular afternoon. It has not established why you have a headache or whether a medicine is right for you.

Vata, pitta and kapha are the three doshas of Ayurvedic theory. Teachers often introduce them through movement, transformation and stability respectively. These are ways into a larger body of thought; lining up three personality types with three short definitions misses much of the discussion.

When reading a passage, look for what the author is describing. Is it a person's usual pattern, a change they have noticed, or a theoretical explanation? Write that context beside the term. A label that sends you back to the text can be useful. A label that persuades you to stop treatment or buy a remedy is being asked to do something quite different.
